What this does

Turns a JPG (lossy, no transparency) into a PNG (lossless, supports transparency). Every pixel is kept exactly as it is in the JPG — nothing is re-compressed — so the picture will not get worse, but it will not get better either: JPG artefacts already in the file stay.

When PNG is the right choice

You need a transparent background later (logos, stickers, overlays).
A form or upload only accepts PNG.
You will edit the image again and again — PNG does not lose quality on each save.

Good to know

Expect the file to grow, often 3–10×, because PNG does not throw information away. For photos that only need to be viewed, JPG or WebP stays smaller.
